Electric Tankless Water Heaters  - High Efficiency On Demand Water Heating

When installing an electric tankless water heater, a number of considerations should be taken into account. Electric tankless water heaters do require a relatively high electric power draw, since the water must be heated quickly to the desired temperature. Typically, tankless electric water heaters are less powerful than their gas counterparts with a maximum flow rate of approximately 3 gallons per minute. Additionally, it is important that the available supply of electricity is taken into account, since some units require as much as 120 amps.

So how do gas tankless water heaters compare?  Even though the cost of natural gas is generally cheaper than electricity per BTU of output power, this benefit is generally outweighed the higher efficiency levels of electric units. Some electric tankless water heaters are up to 98.5% efficient. Such efficiency levels are often offset in gas models by the standing pilot light.

The installation cost of an electric tankless water heater will generally be higher than gas units, since they draw more power and require multiple circuits. Prices of units will typically range from $200 - $1200 dependant on the amount of hot water the unit will produce. The expected life expectancy of tankless electric water heaters is approximately 20 years, compared to 10-15 years for tank type units. With their high efficiency levels, and long lifespan, electric tankless water heaters offer a superior on demand water heating solution.
